Description:
This is a small paperback published in 1984 by Drive publications for the AA, and written by John Dodgson. It has an A – Z list of town names, and a short explanation of how they came by them. Some random examples are Derby – the village with deer from the old Scandinavian diuraby; Lanark – place in a glade from the Welsh Llanerch, ‘a clear space’; Margate – place at the gate leading to the sea, from the old English ‘mere’; and Salford – from the old English salh (willow) and ford. A really interesting and informative little book in very good condition. The front cover has a crease on the top corner.
